Dance instructor's bold costumes spark fierce cultural clash in North Ossetia
A dance instructor from North Ossetia has become the centre of a heated online debate. Diana Pogorelova, based in Vladikavkaz, faces sharp criticism for her training videos and choice of costumes. Some social media users have labelled her and her students in offensive terms, sparking wider arguments about culture and freedom.
The controversy began after Pogorelova shared clips of her dance classes on social media. Her personal page has over 300,000 followers, while her dance school's account counts more than 80,000 subscribers. Critics quickly targeted her outfits, calling them too revealing and making derogatory comparisons.
Ossetian blogger Fred-As Betanti argued that Pogorelova and others who break traditional moral norms should focus on preserving Ossetian culture instead. Some commentators even urged local officials to step in. In response, Pogorelova warned she would report hate speech, harassment, or insults based on appearance or nationality to law enforcement. Another local blogger, Zaur Farniev, took a different stance. He criticised the tone of the discussion, arguing that progress demands freedomโeven if it includes behaviours some find objectionable.
The dispute highlights tensions between cultural tradition and personal expression in North Ossetia. Pogorelova's warning about legal action adds a new dimension to the debate. Meanwhile, the online arguments show no signs of slowing down.
