Research conducted by Patrick Manser and his colleagues at ETH Zurich supports this approach. Their studies involving around 40 participants aged around 73 years old showed that training with "Exergames" improved mental performance and caused measurable brain changes in those with mild cognitive impairments. Participants trained five times a week for twelve weeks, performing cognitive-motor tasks that trained attention, memory, and spatial reasoning.

Each new hobby requires disengaging from one cognitive mode and entering another, which supports mental agility. This constant switching helps us maintain novelty and keeps our minds active and engaged.

To reap the full benefits, it's essential to balance depth and variety. Committing enough time to each hobby to build skill is crucial, but so is exploring new ones. Rotating activities weekly or seasonally can help maintain this balance.

Lastly, it's beneficial to choose hobbies that stretch your abilities rather than only those you find easy. Challenging ourselves in new ways keeps our minds sharp and our spirits high.
