D&D player clashes with group over forced support roles in battles

A Dungeons & Dragons player has spoken out about frustration with her gaming group over being repeatedly pushed into support roles. After more than a year of playing characters like Cleric and Divination Wizard, she wanted to try a combat-focused Paladin—but her group still expects her to stay in the back and provide backup.

The player, known as AccomplishedEvent672 on Reddit, explained that she rolled a Paladin to deal damage in battles. However, her group insisted she remain in a supportive position, sparking disagreements over how the class should be played. The conflict extended to debates about the Paladin’s moral role within the game’s story.

The player remains frustrated with her group’s expectations but appreciates the encouragement from others. She still hopes to play a more combat-driven role in future sessions. For now, her next character choice may reflect her desire for a different kind of gameplay.
