Cycling route in Corsica showcases the island's untamed natural beauty
Exploring Corsica by Bike: A Journey Through Time and Nature
Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the heart of Corsica, a Mediterranean island that offers a unique blend of towering laricio pines, crystal-clear mountain streams, and free-roaming wildlife, creating a nearly primitive atmosphere. This is the Great Corsican Crossing by Bike, a 12-stage, nearly 600 km journey connecting Bastia to Bonifacio, inaugurated in 2020.
The route begins at Calenzana, a renowned starting point for the GR20, and winds its way through some of the most stunning landscapes Corsica has to offer. The GT20 sets off on a magnificent descent from the Col de Vergio, winding through the Valdu Niellu forest before opening up to the serene Lake of Calacuccia.
As the road clings to the walls of the Spelunca gorges, where water has carved abrupt cliffs, the Golo River, the longest watercourse on the island, accompanies the descent. The route passes through the impressive Scala di Santa Regina, an awe-inspiring gorge carved into the rock, and the towering Col de Vergio, the highest pass on the island at 1,477 m, featuring the statue of Christ the King.
The seventh stage of the bike route, from Porto to the Col de Vergio, covers approximately 34 km and delves into the mineral heart of Corsica. The view from the Col de Vergio takes in Monte Cinto and Paglia Orba, the island's highest peaks.
The GT20 veers towards the wild west coast from Calenzana, winding through the picturesque village of Galeria, nestled by the water, and the Scandola nature reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The historic capital of the island, Corte, is reached at the end of the stage. Its citadel overlooks the confluence of valleys.
The four new stages of the mountain bike route "A traversata Maio" from Calenzana to Corte in Corsica pass through the towns of Calenzana, Piana, Porto, and Corte, featuring notable points such as the dramatic Calanques de Piana cliffs, the historic Genoese towers, and panoramic views of the Gulf of Porto.
The Col de Marsolino, a stage of the Tour de France, is encountered on the route. The descent from the Col de Marsolino winds through the Fango valley, offering challenging slopes ranging between 7 and 12%. The summit of the Col de Marsolino offers a breathtaking panorama of the Bay of Calvi.
Evisa, a town famous for its chestnuts, is encountered on the route. The journey continues, offering a rugged but spectacular journey from Calenzana to Corte, with the Scandola nature reserve visible from the long climb to the Col de Palmarella.
Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a casual enthusiast, the Great Corsican Crossing by Bike promises an unforgettable journey through time and nature, showcasing the island's stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture.
