'Cycling Infrastructure Update': Completion of Construction for Cycling in Charlottenburg (Opernroute Nord)
The city of Berlin has announced the completion of the "Opernroute Nord", a new priority cycling route spanning approximately 2.2 kilometers between Bismarckstraße and Olbersstraße in the Charlottenburg district. This project, which has been in the works for several years, is set to improve the connectivity of cycling traffic in the neighborhood and facilitate access to the new priority route.
The "Opernroute Nord" project was funded by both the federal "Stadt und Land" program and funds from the state of Berlin. The key measure involved the expansion of 2.50-meter-wide cycling lanes in both directions, separated from motorized traffic by safety barriers and coated in green. Around 330 meters of cycling streets were created in Zillestraße and Krumme Straße as part of the project.
To enhance visibility along the route, red markings are used at intersections. Pedestrians will benefit from new, safe crossing points and barrier-free double crossings. Furthermore, structural elements have been implemented to create a physical distance between cyclists and motor vehicles.
Approximately 110 new bike racks were installed, significantly increasing the capacity of parking spaces for cyclists. The event to celebrate the inauguration of the new cycling route is planned for August 26, 2025, at the Goetz-Friedrich-Platz in front of the Deutsche Oper.
The "Opernroute Nord" connects two important junctions within the Charlottenburg area. The project was designed by the District Office of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and carried out by the state-owned company infraVelo in close coordination with the district and the mobility administration.
The completion of the project offers a safe and comfortable route for cyclists in the future. The person who planned and implemented the "Opernroute Nord" project in Charlottenburg is Axel Karge. It's important to note that around 100 parking spaces for cars had to be removed, although most parking spaces remained intact.
Representatives from politics and administration will celebrate the inauguration of the new cycling route together with citizens. The Lise-Meitner-Straße was previously comprehensively renovated, facilitating the implementation of the marking work for the "Opernroute Nord".
The construction work was carried out in three phases, with the final phase expected to be completed in 2025. This new cycling route is a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation in Berlin and encouraging more people to choose cycling as a means of commuting.
