'Cycling Infrastructure': Completion of Construction Project in Charlottenburg for Cyclists
The long-awaited "Opernroute Nord" project in Charlottenburg has been completed, marking a significant step towards improving the connectivity of cycling in the neighborhood and facilitating access to the new priority route.
The project, which spans approximately 2.2 kilometers between Bismarckstraße and Olbersstraße, was funded by both the federal "City and Country" program and funds from the state of Berlin. The main feature of the project is the expansion of 2.50-meter-wide cycle lanes in both directions. Around 330 meters of bike lanes were created in Zillestraße and Krumme Straße.
In order to ensure the safety of cyclists, these cycle lanes are separated from motorized traffic by safety strips and given a green coating. Further safety measures include structural elements creating a physical distance between cyclists and motor vehicles, new, safe crossing points and barrier-free double crossings for pedestrians, and red markings at intersections to enhance visibility.
The construction work was carried out in three phases, and approximately 100 parking spaces for cars had to be removed, although a large number of parking spaces remained. To compensate for this, around 110 new bike racks were installed, significantly increasing the capacity of parking spaces.
The "Opernroute Nord" project was designed by the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district and implemented by the state-owned company infraVelo GmbH. The planning and implementation of the project were carried out by infraVelo in close coordination with the district and the mobility administration.
Representatives from politics and administration will celebrate the inauguration of the new cycling route together with citizens at an official event planned for August 26, 2025, at the Goetz-Friedrich-Platz in front of the Deutsche Oper. The event is organized by the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district.
The "Opernroute Nord" project aims to offer a safe and comfortable route for cyclists, contributing to the promotion of sustainable transportation in the city. With its completion, Charlottenburg now boasts a more bike-friendly environment, encouraging more residents and visitors to choose cycling as a mode of transportation.
