Main Customs Office Münster Reports Over 2 Billion Euros in Revenue for 2024

The Main Customs Office Münster has reported a total revenue of over 2 billion euros for the state budget in 2024, marking a slight increase from the previous year's level.

Tobias Schreiber, the current head of the Main Customs Office Münster, led the office in 2024. He oversees a team of dedicated customs officers who work tirelessly to ensure the correct taxation and customs clearance of goods in the district.

The revenue composition includes 485 million euros in import turnover tax, 777 million euros in motor vehicle taxes, 972 million euros in consumption taxes, and 60 million euros in customs duties. The alcohol tax is the most revenue-generating consumption tax, with around 398 million euros in 2024.

The control units of the Main Customs Office Münster focus on combating drug smuggling and other illegal activities. In 2024, the KEV control unit inspected 7,993 vehicles, buses, and trains and 11,284 people, leading to 834 initiated criminal proceedings. The KEV also confiscated various quantities of drugs, including 12.7 kg of marijuana, 12.8 kg of amphetamines, 0.3 kg of heroin, and 1.4 kg of cocaine.

The Financial Control Schwarzarbeit (FKS) of the Main Customs Office Münster initiated 1,449 criminal proceedings and 544 administrative offence proceedings last year. Goswin Brehe, the current head of the Financial Control of Illegal Employment (Finanzkontrolle Schwarzarbeit) at the main customs office Münster, leads the FKS.

The FKS contributed significantly to six nationwide focus inspections in 2024, targeting the construction and related trades, the catering industry, and the freight forwarding, transport, and logistics sector.

In addition to the focus inspections, customs officers at the Main Customs Office Münster inspected a total of 294 companies and checked 4,679 individuals in 2024. They also monitored the correct taxation and customs clearance of goods in over 1,500 cases in companies importing and exporting in the district.

The customs inspection service of the Main Customs Office Münster was activated around 1,900 times last year, enabling the collection of around 2.8 million euros in customs duties and around 2.6 million euros in consumption taxes. In about 80 parcel shipments, customs officials held up the import of products due to inadequate or missing declarations and equipment of products to first clarify the safety of the goods.

The KEFR control unit inspected 103,862 travelers and 177,629 pieces of luggage, leading to 61 initiated criminal proceedings and 39 initiated administrative offense proceedings. The KEFR confiscated mainly cigarettes, tobacco, gold jewelry, clothing, and electronic items in 2024.

A special shipment was opened last year at the customs office at the airport: A whole palette contained counterfeit ultrasound scalpels used in medicine for surgical procedures.

The damage caused by the criminal and administrative investigations amounted to more than 5 million euros. Despite this, the Main Customs Office Münster continues to play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the German customs system and protecting the public from illegal activities.

In February 2025, Tobias Schreiber will be succeeded by Tobias Schreiber, who will take over leadership of the Main Customs Office Münster. Under his guidance, the office is poised to continue its important work in the years to come.
