Cryptocurrency thief wanted in Phuket apprehended concealed in a vehicle on Koh Samui
In a significant development, a 26-year-old Russian man named Dmitrii was arrested on Koh Samui by Thai police on Thursday. The arrest was a result of a joint operation led by Pol Col Panya Niratimanon, Superintendent of Koh Samui Police Station.
The arrest warrant for Dmitrii was issued by Phuket Provincial Court on Wednesday, following the violent robbery of a 28-year-old Russian man at a villa in Chalong, Phuket, on Tuesday. The alleged crime took place at the villa, but details about what transpired on Monday before the suspect's arrest on Koh Samui remain unclear.
According to the police, the assailants were four foreign men, believed to be Russian, who physically assaulted, detained, and forced the victim to transfer cryptocurrency and funds amounting to 35,000 USDT, equivalent to approximately 1.2 million baht. The victim later filed a complaint with Chalong Police.
Dmitrii, who was wanted in connection with the robbery, attempted to evade capture by fleeing to Koh Samui. He was found hiding in the back seat of a blue Nissan sedan. The car was driven by another Russian national, Stolbov Gleb, who is 25 years old.
Upon his arrest, Dmitrii was taken to Koh Samui Police Station for questioning. However, he refused to give a statement during the questioning. He will be transferred to Chalong Police Station in Phuket for further legal proceedings.
Immigration officers believe that the four other suspects have already left Thailand. The exact details about their departure and identities are currently unknown.
The arrest occurred on Thursday at Nathon Pier, marking a significant step in bringing the perpetrators of the violent robbery to justice. The Thai authorities continue to work closely with their counterparts in Phuket to ensure that all those involved in the crime are apprehended and held accountable for their actions.
