Tragedy Strikes Saarland: The Funeral of Police Officer Simon Bohr

In the heart of Saarlouis, a somber procession took place this week, marking the farewell of Police Officer Simon Bohr. The 34-year-old officer was tragically shot dead a week ago during an operation in Völklingen.

The funeral service, held in the evangelical church, was a poignant gathering, attended by approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people. The service was not open to the public but was broadcast from a media center set up for the occasion. Hundreds of police officers in uniform participated in the funeral march, which took place in front of the church.

Simon Bohr was described as an incredibly positive person, professional, reliable, and approachable. He lived for his calling as a police officer and gave everything for the protection and security of his fellow human beings. His selflessness was evident, as he stood up for everyone and never spoke ill of others.

The widow of Simon Bohr gave a speech at the funeral service, but the content was not publicly accessible. The evangelical pastor Jörg Beckers described the farewell as "incomprehensible, disturbing, terrible, and infinitely sad." The Saarland police is going through one of its darkest hours, according to the police president Thorsten Weiler.

The weapon used in the brawl where Simon Bohr was shot dead has been traced back to a trainee police commissioner. The public prosecutor's office is investigating the incident, including on suspicion of murder. A central memorial service for Simon Bohr is planned for Friday in Saarbrücken.

The procession with the coffin stretched for about 1.6 kilometers through the city and ended at the cemetery where a private burial took place. Many people in attendance held white roses, and tears were often seen.

German politician Anke Rehlinger, the Minister-President of Saarland, attended the funeral and expressed deep condolences to Simon Bohr's family. The Saarland's Minister President and Interior Minister Reinhold Jost were also in attendance.

During the service, a trumpet solo of the Beatles song "Yesterday" was played, and a painted heart image was set up in front of a podium with a photo of Simon Bohr. The 34-year-old police officer leaves behind a wife and two children.

Our thoughts are with Simon Bohr's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May his memory continue to inspire us all to strive for a safer and kinder world.
