Critiques the inadequacy of ICE's direct connection to Munich, as related to Saarbrücken
Saarbrücken, Germany - The city's mayor, Uwe Conradt, has voiced his concerns over the suspension of the ICE direct connection between Saarbrücken and Munich by German Railways (Deutsche Bahn). The suspension, scheduled from July 4 to August 14, 2025, and again from September 13 to October 19, is due to construction work between Ulm and Augsburg.
Conradt has called on German Railways to immediately provide transparent information, suitable replacement connections, and improved communication with passengers. He believes that such measures undermine the importance of Saarbrücken as a European transport hub.
The direct connection is a central long-distance traffic link for the state capital, the entire Saarland, and the cross-border Euro-metropolis with around 1.5 million people. Conradt stated that the repeated failures are unacceptable and affect business travelers, students, and families alike, permanently impairing the attractiveness of the location.
In response, Conradt is working with the Saarland state government and the partners of the Euro-metropolis to improve long-distance traffic connections with German Railways and the Federal Ministry of Transport. He has also demanded the immediate establishment of replacement direct connections or at least through connections with only one stop.
The suspension will also affect the celebrations for German Unity Day on October 3 in Saarbrücken. During the suspension, travelers will have to use alternative connections with transfers, such as in Mannheim.
Conradt has previously expressed criticism regarding the announcement and has called for early and comprehensive information to passengers about all replacement measures. He is also seeking investments in rail infrastructure to improve long-distance traffic connections.
Richard Lutz, who is currently acting CEO of Deutsche Bahn, is in negotiations with Mayor Conradt about improving long-distance connections between Saarbrücken and Munich. However, Lutz is set to be replaced soon, and no official successor has yet been named.
The city's demands are not new. Conradt has called on German Railways to provide transparent information, suitable replacement connections, and improved communication with passengers since the initial suspension announcement. The state capital sees the recurring failures as a fundamental problem of insufficient consideration of the Saarbrücken region in the long-distance traffic concept.
