Criticism Intensifies amidst Opposition to the Nominee for the Constitutional Court by the Minister of Justice

In an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig (SPD) expressed her disapproval of the extreme personal harassment and harsh criticism faced by constitutional court candidate Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf.

The dispute over Brosius-Gersdorf's candidacy has led to the postponement of the election of further judicial candidates in the Bundestag. The election of Ann-Katrin Kaufhold and Günter Spinner was previously removed from the Bundestag's agenda due to the ongoing controversy.

Hubig described the behavior of the Union as "more than annoying" and warned that such campaigns drive away good candidates, which we cannot afford. She emphasized the importance of swift decisions for all parties involved in the election of candidates for the Federal Constitutional Court.

Quality and caution are needed in debates, Hubig stated, and harsh criticism without further examination and only correcting the assessment afterwards is unacceptable. She spoke out against attacks on Brosius-Gersdorf, calling it an "unbelievable affair" and a breach of the respect due to candidates for such important offices.

The Bishop of Bamberg, Herwig Gössl, who first criticized Brosius-Gersdorf and later withdrew his criticism, acknowledging he had been misinformed, is one of those who contributed to the controversy.

Hubig's comments apply to candidates for the Federal Constitutional Court as well as to many honorary candidates for local offices. Candidates should be treated differently, according to Hubig, due to their importance for engagement.

She emphasized the importance of talking to each other instead of just about each other, and urged for a more respectful and considerate approach in political debates. Hubig also expressed her concern for the potential damage to Brosius-Gersdorf's reputation and called for measures to ensure that the candidates for the Federal Constitutional Court do not suffer any further unjustified damage.
