Crime at Ore Mountain: Tragic discovery of deceased twins and dramatic bunker incident
In the latest episode of the popular ZDF crime thriller "Erzgebirge", titled "Across the Border", Detective Karina Szabo (Teresa Weißbach) continues her investigation with the support of Forester Saskia Bergelt. However, Detective Szabo approaches the case with little enthusiasm, as she prepares to leave her role for a new position as a chief commissioner in Leipzig.
The investigation leads the team back to the time before the fall of the Berlin Wall, as they uncover the events that occurred decades ago and form a central part of the current case. Construction entrepreneur Kircheiß, innkeeper Uhlmann, and workshop operator Gerber, who were soldiers with the twins at the border to Czechoslovakia at that time, are key figures in the investigation.
The series has been airing since 2019, and this episode marks a significant change, as main cast member Lara Mandoki is leaving the show. Mandoki cited lack of time for other projects due to the filming schedule as the reason for her departure. The production company has not yet decided on a replacement for Detective Szabo, and the name of the new detective taking over her role has not been provided.
The episode opens with the discovery of human remains at a construction site, and the deceased is an older individual, whose death dates back decades. Pathologist Elena Kulikova discovers that the deceased, Holger Berthold, had an excessive amount of methyl alcohol in his blood, suggesting he could not have hanged himself as initially assumed. Berthold is an alcoholic and is also found to be identical to the deceased from the construction site, adding another layer of mystery to the case.
Detective Winkler is absent during the investigation, and Detective Szabo will be present in the next two already filmed episodes. The events of the previous episode are not addressed in this episode, as the focus is on the new case and the changes taking place in the series.
