Cricket Player Retires from Twenty20 Internationals Before Upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia

Mitchell Starc, one of Australia's most prolific cricketers, has announced his retirement from T20I cricket. The left-arm fast bowler, who has been a key figure in Australia's limited-overs setup, has decided to concentrate on Test cricket and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Starc's decision comes just months before the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled for February and March next year, and marks the end of an illustrious T20I career that saw him play 65 matches, taking 79 wickets with an average of 23.81 and an economy of 7.74.

Starc's last appearance in T20I cricket was during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, where Australia won their maiden title. The 2021 World Cup was the pinnacle of Starc's T20 World Cup career, and he stated that Test cricket is his highest priority.

"I have loved every minute of every T20 game I played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup," Starc said. "But my focus now is on Test cricket and the 2027 ODI World Cup. I believe that by quitting T20I cricket, I will be able to remain fresh, fit, and at my best for the upcoming Test series, the ODI World Cup, and the T20 World Cup leading into that tournament."

Starc's retirement from T20I cricket leaves a void in Australia's limited-overs setup, but it also opens up opportunities for younger players to step up and make their mark. In contrast, Starc has played in 11 out of 14 Test matches, the joint-most among his compatriots.

Australia's upcoming Test schedule is busy, with a home series against Bangladesh, a tour of South Africa, a four-match Test series against New Zealand, five Tests in India in January 2027, a one-off Test against England at the MCG, and an away Ashes series.

While Starc has retired from T20I cricket, other Australian stars have also called time on their careers in recent times. David Warner retired from all formats last year, while Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith, and Glenn Maxwell called time on their ODI careers.
