Crafting a DIY Origami Fortune Teller for Children

Cootie catchers, also known as paper fortune tellers, are a popular origami craft enjoyed by children across the globe. This simple yet engaging activity can be made using just a piece of paper.

Steps to Create a Cootie Catcher

  1. Start with a square A4 paper. You can transform it into a square sheet by folding one edge diagonally and cutting off the excess paper.
  2. Fold the square in half, then fold the resulting rectangle in half again. This will give you a smaller square.
  3. After making a square, fold all the corners to the center to create a cross shape.
  4. Flip the paper so that the cross shape is downwards, then fold all the corners to the center again.
  5. Write numbers on each side of the triangles. Under each number, you can write predictions or answers to questions.
  6. Open the folded paper to reveal four triangular shapes on one side and four square flaps on the other.
  7. Fold the triangles upwards, and the flaps downwards, to create a cootie catcher.

Uses of a Cootie Catcher

Beyond being a fun activity, cootie catchers can also serve as a tool for decision-making in everyday life. They can help alleviate boredom in children and provide a creative outlet for their imagination.

The origami construction known as child's play is the creation of simple origami paper figures, often introduced step-by-step for children from around 7 years old. Other names for a cootie catcher include salt center, chatterbox, buffalo shakers, fortune tellers, Himmel and Hoelle, and many more.

So, gather some paper and let your creativity unfold! Enjoy making and playing with your very own cootie catcher.
