Coyoacán honours 50 trailblazing women on International Women's Day
Coyoacán's local government celebrated International Women's Day by honouring 50 women for their achievements in fields like science, culture, and public service. The main event, held at the AAPAUNAM headquarters, recognised figures such as chemist Bertha Rodríguez, entrepreneur Kena Moreno, and young polyglot Aylin Mérida.
Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez used the occasion to highlight the ongoing work to support women's roles in the borough year-round, not just on a single day.
The ceremony brought together women from diverse backgrounds, including academics, athletes, artists, and activists. Among those recognised posthumously were Bartolita Sánchez and María de los Ángeles Moreno. Gutiérrez Aguilar praised their contributions as part of a broader effort to acknowledge women's impact on Coyoacán's progress.
In his speech, the mayor emphasised the borough's commitment to women's safety, noting that Coyoacán now has the lowest femicide rate in Mexico. He attributed this to targeted policies and community efforts aimed at protecting women. Gutiérrez also called for wider reflection on the essential role women play in creating a fairer society.
The event underscored the borough's dedication to gender equality. Gutiérrez declared that both he and the women of Coyoacán remain unstoppable in their push for rights and security. He reiterated that recognising women's achievements must extend beyond symbolic gestures, reinforcing the need for continuous action.
The 50 honoured women represent a range of professions and contributions to Coyoacán. Their recognition aligns with the borough's broader goals of equity and safety. While no central records track similar awards nationwide, local efforts like this one continue to highlight women's vital role in public life.
