Council has chosen to prolong the due date for the delivery of application forms for a fresh directive to the Assembly.

In a bid to address the alarming rate of drunk driving among young adults, there is a growing call for an extension of the alcohol ban for new drivers up to the age of 25. This proposal is primarily driven by the significant increase in traffic accidents and fatalities linked to young adults aged 21 to 25.

Research indicates that this age group is the most likely to drive under the influence of alcohol, contributing heavily to road accidents. The extension of the ban is intended to reduce alcohol-impaired driving incidents, save lives, and reduce alcohol-related harm within this vulnerable population.

Key reasons behind this move include the high likelihood of drunk driving among young adults between 21 and 25. They account for a substantial portion of alcohol-impaired driving accidents. Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that increasing the minimum legal drinking age to 21 previously resulted in substantial declines (16% median decrease) in motor vehicle crashes among young drivers. Extending restrictions further could build on these positive outcomes to improve road safety.

Underage and young adult binge drinking contributes heavily to fatal crashes and other severe consequences such as alcohol dependence, adverse health outcomes, suicide, and homicide. These factors justify stricter controls for longer periods.

Moreover, drunk driving leads to enormous societal costs (e.g., $100 billion related to alcohol-related accidents) and personal legal consequences, emphasising the need for extended preventative measures.

In addition to the proposed extension, more police presence and alcohol checks, especially in urban hotspots on weekends, could have an additional effect in deterring drunk driving and enhancing road safety.

The ultimate goal is to establish a permanent culture of sober driving, with the hope that early habits have a long-term impact on drivers' behaviour. Traffic psychologists are also advocating for new impulses in driver training for young people, including practice in resisting peer pressure in social situations, such as parties, to further support this objective.

  1. Education on the dangers of drunk driving should be integrated into workplace-wellness programs to promote a culture of sober driving.
  2. Research reveals that chronic diseases such as cancer, respiratory conditions, digestive health problems, and eye-health issues are linked to alcohol consumption.
  3. Mental-health conditions, like depression and anxiety, are also exacerbated by alcohol abuse, further underscoring the need for prevention.
  4. Therapies and treatments for autoimmune disorders can have adverse interactions with alcohol, making it crucial for those with such conditions to avoid drinking.
  5. Nutrition plays a significant role in overall health, and a balanced diet can help strengthen the immune system, making one less susceptible to the effects of alcohol.
  6. Proper parenting involves setting a good example and educating children about the risks associated with alcohol consumption, including drunk driving.
  7. Cardiovascular health is primarily affected by lifestyle choices, including avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and maintaining a fitness and exercise routine.
  8. Neurological disorders can be triggered or worsened by alcohol, making it mandatory to abstain from drinking, especially during periods of treatment.
  9. In the realm of personal finance, excessive drinking can lead to financial instability due to the high cost of alcohol and potential legal fees stemming from alcohol-related offenses.
  10. Skin conditions can be exacerbated by alcohol, leading to a negative impact on one's overall appearance and self-confidence.
  11. Lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and prioritizing mental and physical well-being, can help reduce the temptation to drink.
  12. In the context of food and drink, opting for non-alcoholic options can help maintain a balanced diet and promote overall health.
  13. Maintaining a clean and organized home environment, as part of home and garden care, can contribute to reduced stress levels and fewer impulses to drink.
  14. A successful business relies on the well-being and productivity of its employees, making it essential to foster a work culture that encourages sober living.
  15. In terms of personal finance, investing in education-and-self-development opportunities can lead to a more rewarding and fulfilling career, potentially reducing the urge to cope with stress through alcohol consumption.
  16. Responsible shopping involves making conscious decisions about what to consume, including avoiding alcohol and making healthier food choices.
  17. Career development can be facilitated through self-discipline and focus, reducing the need for stress relief through alcohol consumption.
  18. Engaging in hobbies such as sports, or activities that require mental engagement like solving puzzles or playing casino-and-gambling games online, can serve as alternatives to alcohol for leisure and relaxation.
