Coopers Chase Received Vitality Through The Arrival of The Thursday Murder Club
In the heart of Berkshire, Englefield House served as the picturesque location for Coopers Chase, the luxury retirement village at the centre of the Netflix adaptation of Richard Osman's "The Thursday Murder Club."
The grand estate, with its lush, untroubled, and sedate surroundings, provided the perfect backdrop for the vibrant and lively atmosphere that the production team aimed to create. The cast members, including Helen Mirren, found the portrayal of Coopers Chase to be nothing short of beautiful.
James, the director, had in-depth and caring conversations with each cast member about creating their unique environments for Coopers Chase. This meticulous approach was evident in the carefully crafted interiors of each character's apartment.
Inside Joyce's apartment, the set was likened to a lemon drizzle cake, with a floral "Laura Ashley-esque" interior. Conversely, Ibrahim's apartment was designed as a "gentleman's club kind of space." Elizabeth's apartment, on the other hand, contained artifacts from her travels, reflecting her adventurous spirit.
Interestingly, the interiors of each character's apartments were not filmed on location. Instead, they were carefully constructed on sets. The Jigsaw Room, where the murder club discusses their cases, was built on site at Englefield House. A unique detail invented for the film was the use of puzzle boxes to keep the club's files.
The filming primarily focused on the exteriors at Englefield House. However, the Netflix adaptation of "The Thursday Murder Club" was primarily filmed in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, which stood in for the fictional town of Fairhaven. Additional shooting was done at Gaddesden Place in Hertfordshire for the retirement village Coopers Chase.
Englefield House has previously been used as a filming location for various major projects. In 2017, Pippa Middleton tied the knot at St Mark's Church in Englefield Green, England, with Prince George serving as a page boy and Princess Charlotte as a bridesmaid.
Ron's apartment in Coopers Chase, often described as "the lad who's never grown up," added a touch of whimsy to the otherwise elegant setting. Ben Kingsley, who plays Ibrahim, described his conversations with James as in-depth and caring.
The cast members expressed a desire to live in the portrayal of Coopers Chase as it is depicted in the Netflix adaptation. Coopers Chase, in their eyes, is a fantasy that perfectly encapsulates the charm and elegance of retirement living.
