Convict Chao Xu admits to 24 counts of sexual offenses, secretly filming his victims using a camera hidden within an air freshener.
Serial Rapist Chao Xu Pleads Guilty to 24 Sex Offenses
Chao Xu, a Chinese national living in the UK since 2013, has pleaded guilty to 24 counts of sex offenses, including rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault, voyeurism, and upskirting. The crimes were committed against at least 12 victims between February 2022 and June 2025.
The investigation into Xu's crimes is ongoing to identify any further potential victim-survivors. The police are urging people to come forward if they have any information about Xu or believe they may have been a victim.
The crimes were heard at Woolwich Crown Court. Xu was remanded in custody until his sentencing hearing on 14 November.
Xu was alerted to his crimes after holding a networking event at one of his properties in Greenwich in June. One of the women who attended the event became unwell, and Xu offered for her to stay, before raping her several times.
Detective Chief Inspector Lewis Sanderson described Xu as a "calculated prolific sex offender." Suzanne Crane of the Crown Prosecution Service commented that Xu is a serious danger to women, and without the brave testimony of victims, he may have continued undetected.
The evidence presented against Xu includes disturbing images and videos recovered from his phone, hidden cameras found at multiple locations, including a workplace and London Bridge Underground station, and substances commonly used to spike drinks found at his home.
Police found hundreds of intimate images and videos of women on Xu, which appeared to be filmed without consent. Xu was also found to have drugged the woman with substances known to cause drowsiness and incapacitation.
The judge, Recorder Simon Stirling, stated that Xu's inevitable outcome is a lengthy custodial sentence. The Crown Prosecution Service worked closely with the police to build a strong case against Xu.
No publicly available information specifies which victims of Chao Xu, living in Greenwich, southeast London, between February 2022 and June 2025, remain unidentified. Xu was also found to have planted hidden cameras in air fresheners and bathrooms at multiple locations.
The police are continuing their efforts to identify any further potential victim-survivors and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Anyone who believes they may have been a victim is also urged to come forward. The police are committed to supporting victim-survivors throughout the investigation and trial process.
