Contests Refusal of Refugee Shelter in Lukasklinik - a Right Move!

In a significant development, the Düsseldorf District Government has decided to abandon plans to convert the former St. Lukas Clinic in Solingen into a refugee shelter. This decision comes after persistent opposition from the Citizens' Initiative for Solingen (BfS) and concerns raised by local residents about the transport connections, supply situation, and proximity to senior facilities.

Martin Bender, the 1st chairman of the BfS, expressed his welcome for the decision, stating, "We are pleased with the district government's decision to address our concerns and consider the best interests of Solingen's citizens."

Jan Michael Lange, chairman of the BfS faction in the Solingen city council, made a similar statement, saying, "I am glad that the district government has taken our concerns into account and made a decision that prioritises the needs of our community."

The Lukas Clinic, due to its location and infrastructure, was deemed unsuitable for housing refugees. The opposition, from the beginning, was based on problematic transport connections, an inadequate supply situation, and proximity to senior facilities.

Despite the decision, the goal of the BfS regarding the former St. Lukas Clinic is not explicitly detailed. However, given their previous opposition to the refugee shelter plans and their advocacy for the clinic to serve a purpose that benefits Solingen's citizens, it can be inferred that they will continue to advocate for the best use of the property that serves the community.

Martin Bender, in concluding his statement, emphasised, "We will continue to advocate for the former Lukas Clinic to be used in a way that meets the needs of our citizens. We are hopeful that the district government will work with us to find a solution that benefits everyone."

The district government's decision to abandon plans for the refugee shelter at the former St. Lukas Clinic is a testament to their commitment to addressing community concerns and prioritising the needs of Solingen's citizens.
