Contested Ducsu Elections: Five Candidates from the Liberal Student Council Vying for AGS Position, Causing Surprise
The Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) has seen a significant number of its leaders contesting for the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) position in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) elections, scheduled for 9 September.
Md Hasibul Islam, initially nominated for the post of secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movements under the BGCS-backed "Anti-Discrimination Students' Parliament" panel, has now also filed nomination papers for the AGS post. He is joined by four other BGCS candidates vying for the same position: Ashrefa Khatun, the central spokesperson of BGCS, Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury, Sanjana Afifa, and Md Ashiqur Rahman Jim.
Ashrefa Khatun, in a statement, highlighted the democratic spirit within BGCS, mentioning that the mass uprising has fostered a sense of leadership among many of its leaders and activists, leading to a strong interest in the Ducsu elections. However, she added that the organisation has not yet discussed taking any disciplinary measures over the issue of multiple candidates for a single position.
Abu Bakher Majumdar, BGCS Member Secretary and general secretary candidate, commented on Hasibul's dual nominations, stating that it is part of their strategic approach for the elections. The presence of five BGCS candidates for the AGS position, however, raises questions about internal discipline and strategic coherence within BGCS.
Md Hasibul Islam, confirming his candidacy for the AGS position, has not yet announced any further candidacy for the office of Secretary-General for the Liberation Wars and Democratic Movements. The other candidate of the BGCS joining the 2025 Ducsu Secretary-General election has not yet been announced.
The BGCS-backed "Anti-Discrimination Students' Parliament" panel has multiple candidates for the AGS position, making it a highly competitive race within the organisation. The outcome of this race, along with the Ducsu elections, is eagerly awaited by students and observers alike.
