Contest in Simulated Courtroom Proceedings Causes Stir in Collegiate Competitions
Holy Cross Mock Trial Team Shines at University of Albany Competition
The Holy Cross Mock Trial club made a strong showing at an intercollegiate competition held at the University of Albany on November 4. The C-team, consisting of first- and second-year walk-ons, took part in the event, marking their first foray into intercollegiate Mock Trial competitions.
Mock Trial is more than just a resume-builder; it's a platform that enhances oratory, collaborative, and research skills, and fosters lasting friendships and memories. The case argued by the C team was State v. Berkeley De La Porta/Poe Cameron, a case involving a group of thieves stealing paintings from a charity gala.
Prior to the competition, only 1 out of 10 members of the C-team had participated in Mock Trial. Molly Coghan '27, captain of the C team, described the case and mentioned that teams could argue on either side.
Meanwhile, the A team, led by captains Ava Turner '24 and Jake Morrow '24, had a record of 4-4 in a recent tournament at Brown University. The B team, with more experienced members, participated in a competition at Brown University two weeks prior.
The C team also participated in a tournament at Connecticut College on February 23rd and 24th. Ceci Massaua '27, who played the role of witness Jun Cage, expressed pride in the team's performance despite being the underdogs. Maggie Baughman '27, who was the head detective of the prosecution's case, stated that the case was more technical and centered around case law.
Holy Cross Irish Dance also made a significant appearance at Villanova University's Annual Intercollegiate Dance Festival. The Benedict Joseph Fenwick Debating Society, first established in 1846, returned to campus and hosted its first debates in 20 years.
Kate Santini '27, who is the chief news editor for the Holy Cross newspaper, shared that information about joining the Mock Trial club in the future will be circulated in the Fall. The Benedict Joseph Fenwick Debating Society was a staple of campus life at Holy Cross for more than 150 years before becoming defunct around 2003.
As the Mock Trial season continues, the Holy Cross community looks forward to the team's future performances and the growth of the Benedict Joseph Fenwick Debating Society.
