Contender Roy Cooper joins crucial United States Senate election campaign

In a significant development for the upcoming 2025 US Senate elections, former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has officially entered the race, aiming to secure a seat previously held by incumbent GOP Sen. Thom Tillis. Tillis announced earlier this year that he wouldn't be seeking re-election.

The Democratic party sees North Carolina as a must-win if they are to have any chance of flipping the Senate Democratic. This is due to the fact that the GOP holds a 53-47 majority in the Senate and will need to defend 22 of the 35 seats up for grabs in 2026.

Cooper, who won re-election in 2020 by about 4.5 points, is widely seen as the Democrats' most formidable candidate. He is likely to face Michael Whatley, Trump-endorsed Republican National Committee Chairman, in the race. However, Whatley has not yet formally declared his candidacy.

Cooper's decision to enter the race comes after Tillis passed on seeking another term after a high-profile clash with President Trump over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Democrats have to protect a seat in Georgia held by Sen. Jon Ossoff, in addition to trying to win seats in North Carolina and other states.

The country, according to Cooper, is facing a fragile moment, and the decisions made in the next election will determine the existence of a middle class in America. He criticized politicians in Washington, DC, for increasing the national debt, disrespecting veterans, and reducing government funding for healthcare.

In his campaign launch video, Cooper conveyed a populist message, lamenting how "for too many Americans, the middle class feels like a distant dream." He previously stated that he didn't want to go to Washington but entered the race due to "not ordinary times."

The state of North Carolina and Maine are generally considered the GOP's most vulnerable seats in the upcoming elections. Democrats have not won a Senate race in North Carolina since 2008, while they have held the governor's mansion since 2017.

It is expected that Whatley will enter the race, as per a previous source. However, Cooper will have to win a primary first before facing off against Whatley in the general election.

Trump endorsed Michael Whatley, former head of the GOP in North Carolina, for the expected competitive race against Cooper. Meanwhile, Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara, opted against running for the Senate seat.

The current Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina running against Roy Cooper is Mark Whatley. Cooper is showing an early lead over Whatley in the 2025 Senate race.

Cooper's entry into the race is a significant win for the Democratic party, as they aim to regain control of the Senate in the upcoming elections. The race between Cooper and Whatley is expected to be a closely contested one, with the outcome potentially deciding the balance of power in the Senate.
