Contemporary Self-Sacrifice for Ideological Causes
In the spirit of unity and support, an initiative called #TogetherInThisMission has been launched to aid the mission of Evangelical Focus. This organisation, in the face of numerous challenges, is making a significant impact in advocating for the rights and safety of Christians worldwide.
The crisis of internally displaced persons in Nigeria is a heavy burden for Christian leaders in the country. Simultaneously, in both Nigeria and other countries, laws passed over a decade ago allow minority churches to register, yet no applications have been approved, making evangelical Christian meetings illegal.
The Bible (Matthew 5:10-12) speaks of the blessings bestowed upon those who are persecuted for righteousness. Regrettably, this reality is all too prevalent in today's world. Christians in parts of India regularly face mob violence, and a recent report from the Evangelical Fellowship of India documents 334 violent incidents against Christians so far this year in India. Shockingly, more Christians are killed for their faith than adherents of any other religion.
Hindu radicals in India use social media to mobilize around Christian funerals, preventing the grieving families from burying their loved ones. In India, a member of the Legislative Assembly, Gopichand Padalkar, made a speech offering a substantial sum for violence against Christian leaders.
Sadly, the persecution of Christians is not confined to India. In Syria and Sudan, the office of the World Evangelical Alliance has made written and oral statements directly to the Human Rights Council, addressing the issues of violence against Christians in these countries. Since the outbreak of conflict with Israel, Iran has arrested over 50 Christians, accusing them of being Zionists.
The office, led by Janet Epp Buckingham, is working tirelessly to engage with the Human Rights Council and advocate for the protection of persecuted Christians worldwide. They are working with two alliances in North Africa, speaking to government officials when it is too dangerous for them to do so themselves. The office is also collaborating with national evangelical alliances in Pakistan and Nepal to prevent violence and de-escalate potentially dangerous situations.
The United Nations has designated August 22 as International Day Commemorating Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle faced by Christians and others who are persecuted for their beliefs.
In the face of these challenges, the office continues to stand firm, embodying the spirit of the apostle Paul, who while in chains for the gospel, asked for prayer and used every opportunity to share the gospel.
