Consultation held by the Commission on the proposed resolution concerning the situation in Ukraine.
In a series of significant developments, a three-way summit between the presidents of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States is reportedly being planned in Budapest. The meeting is set to follow a bilateral encounter between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The proposal for the meeting in Budapest originated from a conversation between Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. However, Leavitt, a spokesperson, did not confirm or deny Budapest as a potential location for the Zelenskyy-Putin meeting. Putin suggested Moscow as a potential location, but Leavitt declined to comment on this.
The U.S. President has expressed a desire to observe the conversation between Zelenskyy and Putin before committing to the three-way meeting. Putin has agreed to a summit with Zelenskyy, but Moscow has not yet provided clear confirmation for the three-way meeting.
The potential deployment of a peacekeeping force is a topic of discussion. Tens of thousands of European soldiers are deemed necessary for effective protection of Ukraine, according to the former commander of U.S. forces in Europe, Ben Hodges. Without the deployment of many thousands of European soldiers on the ground with a clear mandate, strict rules of engagement, and real capabilities that Russia respects, security guarantees remain an empty shell, Hodges asserted.
France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland have indicated their willingness to send soldiers to Ukraine to secure a potential peace contingent. France, the UK, and Germany are planning initial deployments of around 100 soldiers each, while Switzerland is being called upon by the Green Liberal Party to participate in peacekeeping if a ceasefire occurs.
The U.S. could potentially provide air support to any peacekeeping force. However, Trump has ruled out the deployment of U.S. troops in a potential peacekeeping force.
The White House confirmed that U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine will receive visits from his counterparts from several countries this week to discuss security guarantees and their implementation.
Trump has expressed a religious motivation for efforts towards a peaceful solution, stating "I'm trying to get into heaven if possible."
The search for a location for the three-way summit is complicated by an International Criminal Court arrest warrant outstanding for Putin on charges of war crimes. It is unclear whether the Kremlin is willing to participate in the three-way meeting. Trump is discussing the opposition of Russia to peacekeeping troops from NATO countries with both Zelenskyy and Putin.
The Secret Service is making preparations for the U.S. President's security in relation to the potential meeting. The discussions surrounding the three-way summit continue, with the hope of fostering peace and security in the region.
