Construction underway transforming road into a two-section single-lane road.
In the heart of Gießen, construction work on Aulweg for district heating lines by the city works of Gießen (SWG) has taken an unexpected turn. Due to unforeseen repairs, the project is now expected to last until the end of July 2025, a two-month extension from the initial plans.
The first phase of construction, which began at the end of March 2025, has been completed. However, technical reasons prevented the coordination of the SWG's laying works with the already completed construction measure in this area. The unexpected repairs include the exchange of an old slide valve of a water pipe and repairs to some points of the sewer.
From March 24 to April 25, 2025, Aulweg will be closed to traffic in one direction between Leihgesterner Weg and Wartweg. During this period, Aulweg will be accessible in the direction of Schubertstraße. A detour via Ludwigstraße is provided and signposted for those travelling in the opposite direction.
To accommodate the ongoing construction, a one-way traffic regulation will also be implemented on Aulweg beyond Leihgesterner Weg. Only the lane in the direction of Leihgesterner Weg will be available until April 11. After this date, the work will move to the other side of the street.
The SWG apologises for the inconvenience caused by these closures. They are laying house connections for district heating and electricity, including for a hotel, in the area beyond Leihgesterner Weg. The affected area is between Riegelpfad and Wilhelmstraße.
Despite the delays, the SWG remains committed to completing the construction work on Aulweg by the end of July 2025. The condition of the old slide valve was not critical, but it was determined that an exchange would be necessary in the foreseeable future.
The SWG would like to assure the public that they are working diligently to minimise disruptions and complete the project as efficiently as possible. They encourage everyone to follow the signage and detour routes for a safer and smoother journey during this construction period.
