Construction underway to transform dual-lane road into two distinct single-lane stretches.
In the heart of Gießen, traffic regulations on Aulweg have been in place since the end of March 2025, allowing access only in the direction of Schubertstrasse. These restrictions are expected to remain until the end of July 2025, as construction works for district heating lines by Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) are underway.
The initial phase of construction began on March 24, 2025, with the district heating network expansion set to commence. The second phase, involving district heating line work on the other side of the street, started at the end of March as well.
However, the construction works have taken longer than planned due to the discovery of an old slide valve of a water pipe. This unexpected finding necessitated repairs and the replacement of certain sewer points, causing an extension of the total construction time by two months, until the end of September.
During the second phase, the road between Leihgesterner Weg and Wartweg will remain closed to traffic in one direction. A detour via Ludwigstraße is provided and signposted for traffic moving in the opposite direction. From April 1 to April 11, 2025, a second closure will affect traffic, with only the lane in the direction of Leihgesterner Weg available.
SWG is also laying house connections for district heating and electricity, including for a hotel, on the other side of the Leihgesterner Weg. Ulli Boos, spokesperson for SWG, explained that the modernization is being carried out now to save costs and reduce the risk of damage. The exchange of the aging component was deemed necessary in the foreseeable future.
The exact timeline for completing the second construction phase of the district heating pipeline relocation on Aulweg and when the road between Leihgesterner Weg and Wartweg will be fully reopened for two-way traffic has not been publicly specified.
Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and to follow the signposted detours during the construction period.
