Construction on Duke Street repaving begins in Alexandria, along with Mt. Vernon Bridge work.

In the coming days, motorists in Arlington, Virginia, can expect some changes to their daily commute as construction projects kick off on Duke Street and the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge.

Starting Sunday night, construction crews will begin work on Duke Street between Roth Street and Wheeler Avenue. The roadwork is scheduled to last from Sunday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., with the exception of Sunday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, due to the Labor Day holiday. Nighttime milling and paving work is also part of the Duke Street project, which is expected to last approximately two weeks.

During this time, the entrance to Four Mile Run Park and the north driveway of Mount Vernon Plaza will be right-turn only for entrance and exit. The south driveway of Mount Vernon Plaza will remain unchanged.

Meanwhile, construction on the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge across Four Mile Run will also commence early next week. Crews will start demolition on the median of the bridge, and they will also be conducting duct bank installation work at the intersection of Arlington Ridge Road and South Glebe Road. This work is expected to continue until early to mid-September.

The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge project will affect traffic, as the middle lanes will close, reducing traffic from four lanes to two lanes for about two weeks. Pedestrian detours will be marked with signs during the duct bank installation work.

Officials are urging motorists to remain alert while sharing the road with crews during the construction projects. Drivers should expect periodic lane closures and potential delays during work hours for both the Duke Street project and the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge work.

More information about these construction projects can be found on the Arlington County project page. As always, schedules for both projects may change due to weather conditions, equipment issues, other city projects, or utility work coordination.

Stay informed and plan your commute accordingly to ensure a smooth journey during these construction periods.
