The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is set to undergo an exciting transformation with the construction of new transit exchanges, aimed at improving transit access, customer comfort, and safety.

The Oyster River in the Strathcona Regional District is also set to receive an upgrade and a transit exchange as part of this project. Four locations within the CVRD will receive these upgrades, including south Courtenay, downtown Courtenay, downtown Comox, and North Island College.

Construction at North Island College's College Campus Road at Lerwick Road is scheduled to begin this week, with construction in downtown Comox on Port Augusta Street at Comox Avenue expected to start in late August or early September.

The total cost of the five exchanges is approximately 8.8 million USD, with funding coming from the federal and provincial governments, as well as the CVRD. The project will be managed by BC Transit.

Each exchange will include concrete bus bays or cub areas to accommodate heavy-duty buses, larger bus shelters, and new bike racks. Improvements to pedestrian and road infrastructure will also be implemented as part of the project.

The construction of these exchanges is expected to take several months. The contract partner responsible for the construction of the two new BC Transit exchange stations in Comox Valley, downtown Comox, and North Island College is Wacor Holdings Ltd., a contractor from Campbell River.

This project is part of a larger initiative to support continued investment in frequent transit services, making travel in the Comox Valley more convenient and comfortable for residents and visitors alike. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of these exciting transit upgrades!
