Construction of ITV studios' refurbishment project is postponed for two additional months by Michael Gove
The £700m redevelopment scheme known as 'The Slab', planned for 72 Upper Ground on London's South Bank, has faced a delay in its verdict. Originally scheduled for 8 August 2023, the decision is now expected on 6 October, following a request for more time from Michael Gove.
The development, described as commercial and arts-led, has been a subject of controversy due to concerns about its potential harm to the riverfront site and nearby listed buildings and apartments. Despite this, the scheme has garnered support from local young creative groups, planning officers, Lambeth councillors, the Greater London Authority, and even some campaigners.
The development company, 72 Upper Ground, has reaffirmed its commitment to the transformational plans, which involve demolishing the current ITV studios and constructing an office block with 25 storeys and 850,550 sq ft of office space. The company has also stated that the funding for the project is already in place and contractors have been appointed to begin construction as soon as possible.
However, no new information has been provided regarding the potential harm to the riverfront site and nearby listed buildings and apartments. Similarly, no new details have emerged about the contractors appointed for the construction or the construction timeline.
The public inquiry into the scheme, overseen by an independent planning inspector, opened in December 2022. The development aims to strengthen the South Bank of London, and planning approval was granted by Lambeth Council in March last year.
Despite the delay, the spokesperson for 72 Upper Ground remains optimistic about the project, stating that they are committed to delivering a development that will benefit the local community and London as a whole. The verdict, now scheduled for 6 October, will provide clarity on the future of this significant redevelopment scheme.
