Construction of Elbe Ferry: "Amt Neuhaus - Bleckede" for stronger, lasting river link
New Elbe Ferry 'Amt Neuhaus - Bleckede' to Enhance Passenger Traffic
The construction of a new Elbe ferry, named 'Amt Neuhaus - Bleckede', is underway at the Hitzler shipyard in Lauenburg. This modern ferry, set to revolutionize passenger traffic between Bleckede and Neu Bleckede, is expected to be launched into the water in the second half of the year, following by its commissioning.
The contract for the construction of this innovative vessel was signed two months after the Luneburg District Assembly started addressing the improvement of traffic in late 2018. The district is investing around 6.8 million euros in the project, following a Europe-wide tendering process that led to the selection of Hitzler Werft in Lauenburg.
The Hitzler shipyard, renowned for its expertise in innovative drives, is handling the construction of the new ferry. It will be equipped with a gas-electric drive system, utilising biomethane, which significantly reduces the emission of climate-damaging gases.
The new ferry will be a significant upgrade from the current 'Amt Neuhaus', which has been in service since 1939. The old ferry can only accommodate nine cars and is not suitable for modern ferry traffic, as it cannot transport large trucks or buses. In contrast, the new ferry can accommodate 18 cars, buses, or trucks.
Moreover, the new ferry will have a draft of a maximum of 60 centimeters, making navigation on the Elbe even more flexible during low water. This feature will ensure the ferry's operation remains uninterrupted, even during periods of low water levels.
The new Elbe ferry, 'Amt Neuhaus - Bleckede', is set to provide a more efficient and environmentally friendly means of transport across the Elbe, enhancing the region's connectivity and economic growth.
