Construction of contemporary construction site in Greifswald is underway on Helmshäger Hill.

In the heart of Bonn, preparations for a new era in municipal operations are underway. The construction of a modern, sustainable central workshop commenced in late July 2025, marking a significant step towards more efficient and cost-effective operations for the city.

The new workshop, located at "Am Helmshäger Berg", will span approximately 20,000 square meters and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The existing workshop sites at Gützkower Straße 70 and Mendelejewweg 17, which are in very poor condition and house mostly outdated buildings, will be replaced.

The new construction will feature functional administrative buildings, workshops, a vehicle washing hall, a salt shed with a brine plant, garages, carports, and storage areas. This consolidation at the new site will not only improve operational efficiency but also provide an appropriate working environment.

The new workshop will be a showcase of sustainability, with a focus on renewable energy sources and efficient heat management. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof of the vehicle hall to generate electricity in the future. Heat supply for the new workshop will be provided by a combination of a wood chip plant and a heat pump, using the wood chips, a byproduct of the city's green space maintenance, as a local, natural resource.

In line with the gold standard set by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), the construction project will also include a ventilation system with heat recovery and green roofs on buildings and halls to improve working conditions and reduce environmental and climate impacts.

The construction site is situated near an archaeological site, and all earthworks are being carried out under archaeological supervision to ensure the preservation of Bonn's rich history.

While official certification by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) has been waived by the city council for cost reasons, the new construction's sustainable energy concept is expected to meet the gold standard criteria. The energy concept emphasizes preventing heat islands and ensuring the inflow of cold air, with the heat supply secured through a comprehensive energy concept that includes local renewable energy potential analysis and community involvement in energy generation.

This new central workshop is a testament to Bonn's commitment to sustainability and efficiency, setting a high standard for future municipal projects. The start of shell construction is planned for mid-October 2025.
