Renovating a home can be an exciting venture, but it can also be a source of stress and financial strain for many homeowners. A recent survey has shed light on the common issues faced by homeowners during renovation projects.

The most frequent cause of halted projects is the escalating cost, with 31% of homeowners running out of money and 28% encountering unmanageable cost increases. This leaves 22% of homeowners uncertain if their projects will ever be completed, and 21% facing the challenge of restricted living space due to incomplete renovations.

The stress of the renovation process is a significant factor for 75% of homeowners, who feel the pressure acutely. The consequences of stalled renovations are far-reaching, with 13% of homes not weatherproof, messy gardens being a consequence for 27% of projects, and 16% of homeowners having limited cooking capabilities.

In some cases, homeowners have had to dismiss their builders or deal with being abandoned mid-project. The situation is so severe that over 1.2 million homeowners are currently living in homes that resemble construction sites due to stalled renovation projects.

To avoid such situations, homeowners are advised to consult with their home insurance provider before starting renovations, especially if the home will be unoccupied for extended periods.

The survey also revealed the most frequently stalled renovation projects. Decoration tops the list at 43%, followed by garden landscaping (36%), bathroom renovations (18%), kitchen renovations (17%), loft conversions (16%), whole house renovations (16%), open plan adjustments (16%), extensions (15%), plumbing (15%), and re-wiring/electrics (10%).

Many homeowners have discovered unforeseen issues during their renovation projects, which require additional time and resources. The most common causes of delays include moisture problems, technical defects, inefficient construction logistics, and poor planning or incomplete renovation concepts.

The survey also highlighted the safety concerns associated with unfinished work. Almost half of those affected (49%) expressed concern that the unfinished work poses safety hazards. Furthermore, 26% of homeowners are living in caravans due to incomplete renovations, and 16% of homes have boarded-up windows as a result. Additionally, 22% of homeowners are storing building materials around their property due to unfinished projects.

Despite the challenges, 57% of homeowners are hopeful that their projects will be completed within a year. However, 58% of homeowners have regretted ever starting their renovation projects, underscoring the importance of careful planning and preparation.
