Construction Commences on £1.4m University Business Hub at NETPark
Orbit, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at helping businesses grow and innovate, is set to take off at Durham University's research institute at the North East Technology Park (NETPark). The project, spearheaded by OIQ Global, is expected to create a contemporary workspace for technology and science-focused businesses.
Orbit, managed by Durham University, will offer office space, hot-desking facilities, networking opportunities, and collaboration zones for its members. The workspace will be located within one of Durham University's research institutes at NETPark, a leading UK science park.
Sarah Slaven, Interim Managing Director at Business Durham, expressed her excitement about Orbit being a "fantastic addition" to NETPark. She emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure, assistance, and academic expertise to support innovation in the county. Sarah Slaven also expects Orbit to encourage spin-out businesses from Durham University, citing Kromek's global success as an example.
Sophie Walton, Group Director of Academic Engagement at CPI, shared similar sentiments, expressing delight in supporting Orbit's initiative from Durham University. She believes Orbit's membership model is innovative, offering businesses access to world-class scientific capability and support in commercialization ambitions. Sophie Walton expects Orbit to have a substantial acceleration effect on company growth, helping create jobs and supporting the regional economy.
The project involves several North East-based agencies, including VEST Construction, Space Architects, Identity Consult, and Cundall. The £1.4m project is underway, with expressions of interest in becoming a member at Orbit being accepted through orbit.durham@our website.uk.
University research is considered vital to local economic growth, particularly in light of the challenges faced by many businesses due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Orbit aims to help businesses grow and innovate by supporting them to collaborate with Durham University's researchers and students. The support offered by Orbit includes assistance in scaling up technologies, finding finance options, and refining business propositions.
In 2022, OIQ Global integrated the NewSpace startup UNIO Enterprise based in Munich as part of Orbit's global activities. Membership applications can typically be made through the Orbit or OIQ Global official platforms or contact points. Once operational, Durham University and CPI will work collaboratively on the delivery of Orbit.
Sophie Walton, who believes Orbit will play a significant role in the region's economic recovery, expressed her belief that Orbit will be a catalyst for innovation and growth in the North East. With its strategic location at NETPark and its focus on collaboration, Orbit is set to become a hub for businesses looking to innovate and grow.
