President Rebelo de Sousa Emphasises Importance of Reading and Budget Discussions

Portugal's President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has been making headlines recently with his focus on education and the state budget.

In a recent address at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, the President spoke about his intention to visit basic and secondary schools across the country. One of his priorities during these visits will be to engage in reading and commenting on books.

The President's commitment to literacy is further evidenced by his participation in the third edition of the Book 2.0 meeting, an initiative of the Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers (APEL). Here, he emphasised the importance of books for pluralism, freedom, democracy, and understanding others, particularly in a world that can often be irrational.

In addition, President Rebelo de Sousa has a Government decree-law for appreciation that merges the National Reading Plan and the School Library Network with other entities. This move is aimed at strengthening the nation's literary culture and promoting reading among young people.

However, the President has expressed concern about potential bureaucratic difficulties that could affect the National Reading Plan and School Library Network after he leaves office. To alleviate this, he has made inquiries to assist the Government, not hinder it, in this matter.

The President also addressed the state budget discussions, meeting with the Minister of Finance and representatives of the governing coalition last week. He expressed optimism about the approval of the Budget this year, stating that it has been structured to be lighter and focus on essentials.

Despite this optimism, he made it clear that a parliamentary dissolution due to a possible budget crisis is out of the question. He added that the first meetings between the Government and parties about the State Budget for 2026 are disposed to speak and dialogue with time.

The renewal of the state of emergency of School Libraries is considered fundamental by the President, and he has reiterated his intention to visit schools when leaving office.

In conclusion, President Rebelo de Sousa continues to demonstrate his commitment to education and the importance of reading in Portugal. His actions and words serve as a reminder of the role books play in fostering understanding, democracy, and freedom.
