Congressman Rhett Marques declares his candidacy for Alabama's First Congressional District seat
Alabama State Representative Rhett Marques, a resident of the Wiregrass region and a native of Baldwin County, has announced his bid for the 2026 Republican nomination for Alabama's 1st Congressional District.
Marques, who has served two terms in the Alabama State Legislature since 2018, expressed his passion for the Wiregrass region where he lives and the coastal area where he was born, stating that this unique combination prepares him to unify the district and represent it effectively.
Marques was raised in Spanish Fort, AL, which is located in the district's coastal region. He graduated from Fairhope High School and later raised his family and owned a small business in Enterprise, which is located in the Wiregrass region.
Marques has been a proponent of tax relief, having slashed state taxes on groceries, eliminated the state tax on diapers and baby supplies, and implemented a substantial tax relief package for seniors in the Alabama Legislature. He has also stated that he will be a strong champion for President Trump's agenda in Congress, helping to reverse four years of failed Biden economic policies.
His campaign describes him as a reliable and hardworking conservative, and a staunch supporter of Alabama's family farmers and local Main Streets. Marques is often called upon to unify Republicans to support conservative bills.
In the Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District, Marques will be facing off against political newcomer Joshua McKee, a 25-year Army Special Forces veteran, and former Republican Congressman Jerry Carl, who lost his seat to Moore in 2024 due to redistricting.
The partisan voting index of the 1st Congressional District is R+27, making the winner of the GOP primary strongly favored in the November general election. The Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District will be held on May 26, 2026.
