Confirmation of 'Prime Minister's' demise in Israeli strike by Houthi forces
In a shocking turn of events, Ahmed al-Rahawi, the Houthi government's prime minister, was tragically killed in an Israeli attack on Sanaa, Yemen on August 29, 2025.
Al-Rahawi, who was appointed prime minister by the Houthi in August last year, was reportedly hit in a residential building along with several companions. The Houthi leader, Mahdi al-Mashat, confirmed the death of al-Rahawi in a televised speech following the attack.
Mohammed Ahmed Miftah, a former vice president to al-Rahawi, was appointed as the "acting prime minister" by the Houthi's highest political council immediately after the tragic incident.
The Houthi, also known as Ansar Allah, have formed a parallel government in the areas they control, including the capital Sanaa. This parallel government is not internationally recognized and only represents the Houthi apparatus in the areas they control.
In the aftermath of al-Rahawi's death, Mashat vowed revenge, stating "We will avenge him." He also warned "Dark days await Israel" in a video message on Saturday. Mashat further called on foreign companies to leave Israel "before it's too late."
Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, claimed that the attack targeted the chief of staff, the defense minister, and other senior officials of the Iran-linked group. The attack also reportedly killed several ministers, according to Houthi sources.
Prior to the attack, the Houthi had repeatedly attacked Israel with rockets and drones, claiming it as a show of solidarity with Hamas. The Houthi are supported by Israel's arch-enemy, Iran.
It is important to note that the Houthi have been considered the strongest force in Yemen, where a civil war has been raging since 2014. The group has been under scrutiny for their military activities, with Israel regularly attacking targets in Yemen that it claims are linked to the Houthi.
In the initial aftermath of the attack, the Houthi did not comment on al-Rahawi's death. However, as tensions rise, it is expected that the situation will continue to develop.
