Compact Gas Engine Offering Potential Solution to Electric Vehicle Manufacturers' Predicament
Horse Powertrain, a leading British company specialising in low-emission powertrain systems, has announced the launch of a new product: the Horse C15 powertrain. This innovative technology is designed to enable the conversion of fully electric vehicles into range-extended EVs.
The Horse C15 powertrain is compact enough to fit in vehicles with limited space, making it an ideal solution for B- and C-segment vehicles. Measuring just 19.7 inches (500 mm) long, 21.7 inches (550 mm) wide, and 10.8 inches (275 mm) deep, it is no larger than a briefcase.
Matias Giannini, the CEO of Horse Powertrain, highlighted the potential benefits of range-extended EVs. He stated that this powertrain category is the fastest-growing in many global markets. By offering a straightforward and cost-effective way to adapt native BEV platforms into REEVs, the Horse C15 powertrain could potentially save automakers from an embarrassing EV-only mistake.
The powertrain features a 1.5-liter engine, generator, inverter, and cooling package. It is capable of running on gasoline, ethanol, methanol flex fuels, and synthetic fuels. In its naturally aspirated form, the Horse C15 produces up to 94 hp (70 kW / 95 PS). For larger models, a turbocharged engine is available, producing up to 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS).
The Horse C15 powertrain is designed to meet Euro 7 regulations and can fit into the 'frunk' of EVs. It is designed for minimal modification and low costs, ensuring a smooth conversion process for automakers.
Horse Powertrain will showcase the Horse C15 powertrain at the upcoming Munich Motor Show. The company, which has 17 production facilities and 5 R&D centers worldwide, works with clients such as Renault, Geely, and Volvo.
With the Horse C15 powertrain, electric vehicle owners may look forward to increased range and the peace of mind that comes with a gas-powered backup. This innovative technology is set to revolutionise the electric vehicle industry, making range-extended EVs more accessible and affordable.
