In the quaint town of Elmshorn, Germany, an environmental crime has come to light, involving the damage of two red oaks in the Schooltwiete. The trees, exhibiting clear signs of disease, have seen 80-90% of their foliage and young shoots severely discolored or withered.

The public became aware of the damage due to tips, and the investigations are being conducted at the Elmshorn Police-Autobahn-Beat Revier. It was discovered that large amounts of herbicides, specifically glyphosate, were introduced into the soil near the trees in the first months of 2025.

A laboratory investigation confirmed the suspicion of glyphosate use, and an expert opinion commissioned by the city of Elmshorn provided evidence of poisoning. The expert's recommendation does not suggest immediate removal of the affected trees. Instead, they advise observing and, if possible, preserving them, despite potential increased deadwood formation in the near future.

The city of Elmshorn filed a criminal complaint for a serious environmental crime in July 2022. The ongoing investigations do not indicate any changes in the initial findings.

For inquiries regarding this case, the public is encouraged to direct their questions to the Police Directorate Bad Segeberg - Press Office - Dorfstr. 16 - 23795 Bad Segeberg. Michael Bergmann, the contact person for inquiries, can be reached by telephone at 04551-884-2020 or via email at [email protected]. Relevant tips can also be received at the Elmshorn Police-Autobahn-Beat Revier under the phone number 04121-4092-0.

The estimated damage is approximately 20,000 euros, but the long-term impact on the environment and the affected trees remains to be seen. As the investigation continues, the public's vigilance and relevant tips are crucial in bringing the perpetrator to justice and ensuring the protection of Elmshorn's natural beauty.
