In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, Mönchengladbach is gearing up for a significant housing revolution. Affordable housing construction has become a top priority for the city, as advocated by representative Felix Heinrichs.

Heinrichs, along with various partners, is spearheading the charge with funding applications totalling over 90 million euros earmarked for 2025. This ambitious plan aims to construct more than 300 affordable homes, surpassing initial expectations.

The modernization of building stock is a key focus, with an emphasis on meeting climate protection goals and reducing ancillary costs. WohnBau, the municipal housing company, is playing a pivotal role in this endeavour, constructing 80 to 90 affordable homes with financial support and plot provision.

The private construction sector in Mönchengladbach has also picked up, showing a promising response to the housing boom. By 2024, more funds than originally available will be allocated for housing construction, further fueling the growth.

The heating technology in these renovated units has been updated to a modern standard, ensuring energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint. The city's commitment to climate protection is evident in every aspect of the housing construction project.

Felix Heinrichs and the SPD are also committed to improving investment conditions locally, attracting more developers and investors to the city. The planned housing construction boost by the minister received great approval during a recent meeting, indicating widespread support for the initiative.

Verena Hubertz, a representative from Berlin, met with representatives of the Mönchengladbach economy, architecture, and construction industry. Impressed by the innovative renovation methods used in the Hardt district, Hubertz commended Mayor Felix Heinrichs for creating an experimental space.

LEG, a prominent player in the housing sector, has renovated over 200 residential units in 51 buildings in the Hardt district. The successes in Mönchengladbach have not gone unnoticed, with Hubertz planning to take lessons learned from the Hardt district project back to her work in Berlin.

Streamlined approval procedures are expected to contribute to the advancement of new housing construction from autumn onwards, further accelerating the housing boom in Mönchengladbach.

As the mayoral election of 2025 approaches, the identity of the city's leader driving this housing initiative remains unclear. Candidates include Christof Wellens (CDU), Felix Heinrichs (SPD), Marcel Klotz (Greens), and Reiner Gutowski (FDP). Regardless of who takes the helm, the momentum towards affordable and sustainable housing in Mönchengladbach shows no signs of slowing down.
