Commencement of the construction phase for Greifswalder Theatre

The city of Greifswald is embarking on a significant urban development project, as work begins this week on the renovation of the Greifswald Theater. The over 100-year-old building is set to undergo a comprehensive overhaul, with the aim of bringing it up to modern standards in structure, fire protection, technical equipment, energy concept, and spatial structure.

The project, which has a total budgeted cost of approximately 76.6 million euros, is one of the largest urban development projects in the city. Funding for the project comes from multiple sources, including the city's urban development special-purpose fund "Inner City and Butcher's Quarter" and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which is contributing around 22 million euros from the federal and state urban development funding programs.

Excavation of the building pit and development of new water, sewage, and electricity lines will occur as part of the construction process. To prevent the old building from settling during construction, its foundations will be reinforced with underpinning. Simultaneously, demolition work on 1950s and 1970s annexes, including hazardous material remediation, will begin. The old annexes will be replaced by a modern new building.

The renovation project aims to ensure the long-term preservation of the Greifswald Theater, while also making it a more accessible and enjoyable venue for audiences. However, the completion of the new theater is not expected before the year 2030, according to the current planning status.

The search results do not specify the name of the architect responsible for the comprehensive new construction project of the Greifswald Theater. Nonetheless, the city and the state are committed to the project, and work is now underway to bring this historic theater into the 21st century.

As the construction site is set up, residents and visitors to Greifswald can look forward to the future of the Greifswald Theater, a symbol of the city's rich cultural heritage and a testament to its ongoing commitment to preservation and development.
