Commencement of Construction for Greifswalder Theatre
Greifswald Theater Renovation Kicks Off with 98.6 Million Euro Budget
The historic Greifswald Theater is set to undergo a significant renovation, marking one of the largest urban construction projects in the city. The project, which commences this week, will see the old theater transformed into a modern venue, with a total budget of approximately 98.6 million euros.
The Greifswald Theater renovation is being jointly funded by the state and city, with significant contributions from both levels of government. The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is supporting the project with around 22 million euros from the federal and state urban development funding programs. The city's special-purpose fund for the "Innenstadt and Fleischervorstadt" area is also financing the project.
Demolition work on the 1950s and 1970s annexes, including hazardous material remediation, will begin. The remaining old building's foundations will be reinforced with underpinning to prevent settling during construction. The renovation aims to update the over 100-year-old theater building's structure, fire protection, technical equipment, energy concept, and room layout to modern standards.
Following the demolition and reinforcement work, excavation of the building pit and development of new water, sewage, and electricity lines will take place. The old annexes will be replaced by a modern new building, which will house the theater's facilities and provide a more accessible and comfortable experience for visitors.
The completion of the new theater is not expected before the year 2030. The total construction costs for the Greifswald Theater renovation are currently budgeted at around 76.6 million euros, with the remaining funds allocated towards the demolition, reinforcement, and infrastructure development.
The Greifswald Theater renovation project is expected to boost the cultural and economic landscape of the city, providing a much-needed update to the historic venue and offering a modern and accessible space for artists and audiences alike. The project is a testament to the commitment of the city and state to preserving and enhancing their cultural heritage.
