Commemoration event on September 14th - Lüner monuments will be accessible to the public

On Sunday, 14th September, 2025, several landmarks in Lünen will participate in the "Day of Open Heritage" under the theme "Priceless: invaluable or irreplaceable?". This event offers a unique opportunity for the public to explore the city's rich history and heritage.

One of the oldest industrial plants in Lünen, the Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia, will be accessible from 11 am to 4 pm. This industrial building, dating back to around 1870, is located on Huettenallee. The former canteen of the Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia has now been transformed into conference and event rooms.

The Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule on Holtgrevenstraße is another highlight of the day. This school, considered an example of humane post-war architecture, was built between 1956 and 1962 according to plans by architect Hans Scharoun. Guided tours of the school will be offered every full hour on the day of the heritage event.

The Alte Schule Alstedde on Alter Kirchweg, an 1865 ensemble, is a rare example of a "one-room school". The school building, teacher's residence, stable, and school garden make up this historical complex. Guided tours will also be available at Alte Schule Alstedde on the day of the heritage event.

For those seeking a taste of the past, additional entertainment at Alte Schule Alstedde includes coffee and cake, as well as musical performances in the style of the 1860s. However, it is important to note that the buildings are not barrier-free.

Villa Urbahn, a 1925 Anton Huber-designed building on Graf-Adolf-Straße, will also be open during the "Day of Open Heritage". Villa Urbahn has been under heritage protection since 2017 and houses the Museum of the City of Lünen. In addition to current exhibitions, Villa Urbahn will offer guided tours of the old building and a children's painting workshop during the event. Villa Urbahn will be open from 10 am to 6 pm on both Saturday, 13th September, and Sunday, 14th September.

Lastly, the reconstructed school garden at Alte Schule Alstedde is maintained by the Arbeitskreis für Umwelt und Heimat e. V. The school garden at Alte Schule Alstedde can be freely visited.

The University of Münster will be offering tours through its building on Holtgrevenstraße, constructed in 1956/1962, for the Open Monument Day on Sunday, 14th September, 2025.

This promises to be a fascinating day for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in exploring Lünen's rich heritage. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity!
