Commemorating World Humanitarian Day: Ensuring survival during emergencies - consistently neutral, robust, and unbiased
In a pressing appeal, human rights advocate Max Lucks emphasizes the urgent need to prioritize humanitarian assistance for those who require it the most. The current global landscape is marked by war, violence, hunger, and climate disasters, causing over 300 million people worldwide to be in dire need of aid.
One of the most pressing crises is the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where military violence has destroyed the supply chain for the civilian population, undermining fundamental humanitarian principles. The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the lingering effects of ISIS terror in Iraq and Syria, and numerous climate-related disasters also demand immediate attention and humanitarian aid.
In Sudan, over ten million people have been displaced, making it the world's largest displacement crisis. Over 750,000 people in Sudan are on the brink of starvation. The need for humanitarian aid is evident, and there is a demand for a significant increase in funding and the strengthening of proactive humanitarian aid and local structures.
However, the federal government is urged to reform foreign aid to reduce bureaucratic hurdles. The Trump administration's significant reduction in funding could cost 14 million lives by 2030, according to recent projections. Furthermore, the federal budget cuts in 2025 and 2026 are projected to be over 50 percent, contrary to coalition agreement promises.
The abolition of USAID has left a massive gap in global aid structures. While the US government under President Trump did not dissolve USAID in 2018, there was a significant restructuring of aid funds and threats to apply reciprocity principles in trade, which likely caused losses for people in need.
The humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence must remain the guiding principles of all actions. Humanitarian aid aims to save lives, alleviate suffering, and support people regardless of their origin, religion, or political beliefs. However, civilians are systematically attacked in various crises, and humanitarian workers are targeted, making their work even more challenging.
Boris Mijatovic, the chair of the committee on humanitarian aid and human rights, underscores the importance of these principles and the need for immediate action. World Humanitarian Day, observed on August 19th, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by humanitarian workers and the need to support their efforts.
As the world grapples with these crises, it is crucial to remember the importance of humanitarian aid and the need for a coordinated, efficient, and compassionate response. The future of millions of lives hangs in the balance.
