Tesla and Tata Group Strengthen Ties as Electric Car Giant Considers Indian Manufacturing

In a significant development, Tesla is reportedly considering establishing a manufacturing base in India, a move that could signal deeper collaboration with Tata Group subsidiaries in the future.

Tata AutoComp, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Technologies, and Tata Electronics are positioning themselves to play a pivotal role in Tesla's supply chain. These Tata Group companies have become key suppliers to Tesla, contributing an estimated $2 billion worth of Indian supplies to the electric car giant in the fiscal year 2024.

The components sourced from these Indian companies range from wiring harnesses, electric motors, gearboxes, forged parts, and castings to sheet metal, high-value electronics, suspension systems, and electric powertrains. Over a dozen Indian companies, including Samvardhana Motherson, Suprajit Engineering, Sona BLW Precision Forgings, Varroc Engineering, Bharat Forge, and Sandhar Technologies, are currently supplying critical parts to Tesla.

This potential move by Tesla aligns with its strategy to localise production and strengthen its supply chain resilience. Tesla has instructed its suppliers to relocate component manufacturing out of China and Taiwan for vehicles sold outside China, as early as next year.

Negotiations for potential Tesla factory locations in India are ongoing with the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Telangana, but the exact sites have not been disclosed publicly. Establishing a manufacturing base in India could benefit Tesla from tax concessions and duty waivers.

If Tesla does set up manufacturing operations in India, it would mark a significant expansion of its global footprint. The electric car giant is already a major player in the automotive industry, and this move could further solidify its position.

For the Tata Group, this collaboration could open up new opportunities in the global market. Tata Group subsidiaries have already become key suppliers to Tesla, and this could potentially lead to deeper collaboration in the future.

As negotiations continue, the potential of Tesla setting up manufacturing operations in India is an exciting development for both the Indian and global automotive industries. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
