A fire broke out at a cocoa processing facility in Mannheim, Germany, causing a chocolate scent to linger over the city center. Despite the initial chaos, the fire was brought under control within an hour, and no one was injured in the incident.
The facility involved is operated by Ludwig Weinrich GmbH & Co. KG, a company known for its cocoa bean processing operations. The fire started during the production process, setting cocoa beans ablaze. As a precaution, the building was evacuated after an automatic fire alarm was triggered.
Production at the facility continued throughout the night, but the company and the police did not initially respond to requests for comment regarding the fire. However, the fire department has stated that fires at the factory occur "production-related" repeatedly, and the company has taken measures to reduce the risk of fires.
Duty officer Simon Berger from the fire department said, "The company has a lot of contact with preventive fire protection to keep the risk low. However, we can't exclude the possibility of fires 100 percent." The fire department deployed 36 personnel to manage the fire, and no smoke escaped outdoors due to the incident.
The extent of the damage from the fire is currently unknown, but it is not the first time the facility has had a fire. In 2023, there were three fires at the factory. The fire department has had to deal with fires at the roasting facility for cocoa beans before.
Despite the incident, the company remains operational, and the city center has returned to normal. The chocolate scent, while initially unsettling, has added a unique twist to the city's atmosphere. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
