Coalition Collaborations Needs Improvement in Conflict Resolution, According to SPD
In the midst of a dispute over the appointment of a constitutional judge, SPD Chairwoman Bรคrbel Bas has called for improved conflict management within the German government coalition.
In statements made to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Bas emphasized the need for mechanisms for internal conflict resolution to be in place by September. She believes these mechanisms are crucial to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The dispute, which led to the short-term cancellation of the election in the Bundestag, arose when the Union faction withdrew its support for an SPD candidate, causing a rift within the coalition.
Bas also called for coalition partners to find each other better and work on building trust. She highlighted the importance of giving each other some leeway and implementing early warning systems that make it clear where a faction stands on government or coalition projects and whether there are sufficient majorities for them.
Despite the ongoing dispute, Bas continued to support the candidacy of Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf for the position of constitutional judge. She considers Brosius-Gersdorf to be an excellent jurist, and her suitability for the highest court is beyond question for the SPD.
However, Bas warned against the overuse of the term "conscience decision," suggesting that it should be used sparingly and with caution.
The current governing coalition in Germany consists of the CDU, CSU, and SPD, with Friedrich Merz (CDU) elected Chancellor on May 6, 2025. The next regular Bundestag election is scheduled for 2029; the last one took place early on February 23, 2025.
It is unclear at this time what specific internal conflict management mechanisms will be put in place or how the dispute over the appointment of a constitutional judge will be resolved. However, Bas's statements indicate a commitment to finding a solution and preventing similar issues from arising in the future.
