City officials organized a holiday week filled with enriching experiences for children in the city, primarily of Ukrainian descent.
In a heartwarming display of international solidarity, 15 children and teenagers from the Ukrainian village of Bajkiwzi near Ternopil embarked on a week-long vacation in Dormagen, Germany. The trip, which took place from August 28 to September 3, was organised by Dormagen's department of children, youth, family, and school, and was made possible by generous donations from local citizens.
The children, aged between 7 and 16, were accommodated at the Hotel Ragusa on the market square. During their stay, they experienced a variety of activities designed to broaden their horizons and foster cultural exchange.
One of the highlights of the vacation program was a visit to the Cologne Zoo, where the children had the opportunity to see a wide array of animals up close. They also visited the Raphaelshaus, a local cultural institution, and participated in activities at the children and youth center Hackenbroich.
The children also had the chance to attend the Norbert Gymnasium Knechtsteden, where they held meetings with Ukrainian students. These interactions provided a valuable opportunity for the children to share their experiences and learn from one another.
In addition to educational activities, the vacation program included a city tour in Zons, ceramics and acrylic painting in the VHS studio, cooking and waffle baking, a reception at the town hall with Mayor Erik Lierenfeld, a barbecue and games afternoon at the children and youth center Hackenbroich, and a visit to the cathedral.
On September 4, the group made a stop in Krakow, where they were warmly welcomed by the local shooting club. This cultural exchange continued to foster friendship and understanding between the children from different countries.
Mayor Lierenfeld expressed his happiness at welcoming the children to Dormagen during the town hall reception, stating, "It is our pleasure to provide these children with a memorable vacation experience and an opportunity to learn about different cultures."
The children's return journey took place on September 3, marking the end of a week filled with new experiences, friendships, and cultural exchange. This heartwarming initiative serves as a testament to the power of community spirit and the importance of fostering cross-cultural understanding.
