City of Solingen in Deep Grief following the Homicide

In the heart of Solingen, Germany, a memorial was held on Saturday evening to honour the victims of the recent knife attack that took place at Fronhof. The attack, which claimed the lives of three individuals and injured eight others, sent shockwaves throughout the community and beyond.

Mayor Tim Kurzbach of Solingen, along with numerous national and regional officials, including Hendrik Wüst, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, participated in the memorial at Neumarkt. The event was also attended by André Kuper, President of the North Rhine-Westphalia Parliament, Superintendint Dr. Ilka Werner, and City Dean Mohr.

Mayor Kurzbach and his wife laid flowers and candles at the memorial, as did hundreds of mourners who gathered to pay their respects. Around 1,500 people came together at Neumarkt, where they laid candles and flowers, mourned, and prayed.

The attack was clearly intended to spread terror among people peacefully celebrating together. However, the resilience of the Solingen community was evident as they came together to show solidarity and support.

NRW Minister President Hendrik Wüst expressed deep shock over the knife attack, while North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul expressed gratitude to the emergency services personnel. Reul also ordered an increase in police presence in North Rhine-Westphalia, particularly at large events, and assured that investigations into the knife attack are in full swing.

Reul appealed for patience and requested that speculation and conjecture be avoided, while Mona Neubaur, Deputy Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, stated that Solingen has proven it can overcome crises.

In addition to the memorial at Neumarkt, an ecumenical service was held at the city church at 10:00 AM on Sunday, and the Clemens Church also invited to a service at 11:00 AM on Sunday. Mourners can still place flowers and windproof candles at Neumarkt as a continued show of support and solidarity.

Mayor Kurzbach also took a moment to thank everyone for their condolences before the memorial at Neumarkt. The memorial was held one day after the knife attack, and it served as a poignant reminder of the tragic event and a celebration of the strength and resilience of the Solingen community.
