City of Offenbach moving towards alleviating poverty and boosting employment rates
In the heart of Hesse, the city of Offenbach is making strides in social development, according to city reports and local officials. Social department head Martin Wilhelm views these advancements as signs that Offenbach is moving towards becoming a "normal city."
One of the most significant achievements is the decrease in child poverty among children under three years old. This important step towards more equal opportunities for the youngest in the city has been a noteworthy accomplishment.
The SGB-II rate, a key indicator of social welfare, has also seen a significant drop. In December 2023, the SGB-II rate in Offenbach reached a new low of 11.2%, a decrease of almost seven percentage points since 2013. The improvement is even more pronounced among non-German beneficiaries, with the rate decreasing from 23 to 13.3% over the past decade.
However, the rate of child poverty in Offenbach still exceeds the national average, standing at 19.3%. Despite this, fewer people in Offenbach are dependent on basic security, despite a growing population and high immigration.
The employment figures in Offenbach are above the average for the state of Hesse. The number of socially insured employees in Offenbach has increased by 2% to 60,031 by the end of 2023. However, the unemployment rate in Offenbach has risen slightly to 8.9% compared to the previous year.
The German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur fΓΌr Arbeit) recorded an increase in social insurance cases in Offenbach in the third quarter of 2023. This could be attributed, in part, to the aftermath of the corona pandemic and the economic pressure from the Ukraine conflict.
The city report also includes data on housing, homelessness, and support services, and highlights areas where improvements are needed. The Mathildenviertel, a neighborhood in Offenbach, has shown improvement in its social structure with decreasing poverty and unemployment rates.
Wilhelm sees the ongoing economic challenges as a problem for social security that will need to be addressed politically and socially in the future.
