In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Bamberg has lost a beloved figure, Heiner Kemmer, who dedicated his life to the betterment of the city. Kemmer, a former City Planning Chief, served as the CEO of Stadtbau GmbH for over 15 years, leaving an indelible mark on the city.

Mayor Starke paid tribute to Kemmer, stating that he had a rare ability to bring people together, network, and drive projects to success with charm and perseverance. This was evident in his work on numerous significant urban development projects, such as the revitalization of Königstraße and the establishment of the university on the Erba island.

Kemmer's contributions extended beyond urban development. He was a founding member of the theater association and played a crucial role in the successful renovation of the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater. The 2012 State Garden Show, a highlight in Bamberg's cultural calendar, would not have been possible without his dedication.

His commitment to culture was matched by his dedication to social affairs and sports. Kemmer significantly shaped the city through initiatives like the regionally renowned youth support center "BasKIDhall." He also served as a long-standing chairman of the "Friends of the Bamberger Symphoniker."

In recognition of his decades-long commitment, Kemmer received several prestigious awards. In April, he was awarded the State Medal for Social Merits from State Minister Ulrike Scharf. In June 2025, he was honoured with the Bamberg City Medal, a testament to his tireless work in the areas of urban development, culture, social affairs, and sports.

Though Kemmer is no longer with us, the city of Bamberg will keep his memory alive. Thousands of apartments were modernized or newly created under his leadership, ensuring his legacy will continue to benefit the city's residents for years to come. His work has left a lasting impact on Bamberg, and his contributions will not be forgotten.
